Describe your show in a tweet-length description.
Each week Barbara Gray, Tess Barker and I sit down with a fourth funny lady to shoot the shit, goof around & even dole out some advice. From Magic Mike Live Vegas trips with listeners, to Sizzler adventures with French Stewart, we're the BFFs who live in your headphones <3
When did you start it and why?
We started in November 2012 & were originally a monthly comedy talk show & wanted to riff together more than once a week. We quickly fell in love with the medium & decided that was the direction to take the show in.
Who do you work with?
Barbara Gray & Tess Barker are my co-hosts, the three of us are stand up comedians & writers with over a decade of experience in the industry each.
How has working with them changed your relationship?
We were already friends, but podcasting together for almost 7 years has made us sisters. I am always so thankful that we've grown so close even after all we've been through. I think a big part of that is that the three of us have a similar work ethic & are good at knowing each other's strengths.
Do you over-prep, under-prep, or perfect-prep for your episodes?
Haha, let's say perfect... we spend about 5 minutes prepping an episode when we get to the studio, but usually have some ideas on topics before we come in. We like to keep the show conversational & see where the comedy takes us.
If you were going to tell people to listen to ONE episode of your podcast right now, what would you recommend?
It's hard to choose a favorite - I think recently we had Anna Hossnieh on & it was a total blast. So start there! Or any of the episodes with Karen Kilgariff, she's our big podcast sister. We took French Stewart to Color Me Mine, that episode is super goofy too.
Dream guest for your show?
Amy Poehler! Or Laura Dern, she seems like she has some amazing stories.
Who do you wish had a podcast?
When Conan started his, it was a real dream come true, I always thought he should have one. Also Nic Cage because can you imagine?
What are the qualities of a good podcaster?
Being able to listen & go with the flow of an interview - there's nothing worse than guesting on someone's podcast who talks over you & doesn't 'yes and' your story or ask follow up questions. It's a collaborative medium at it's best as far as I'm concerned.
If you were going to start another podcast that would be wildly successful no matter what (so don't worry about it succeeding...this is JUST for you...) what would it be?
I legitimately have thought about starting a podcast where I just talk to millennials about 9/11... it's the one thing we all have in common, it happened to our generation right before we were thrown into the real world so we remember very different childhoods versus adulthoods...we all have a story from that day & eventually we end up telling each other anyway, I think they should be recorded. That or a podcast about Fuller House. I am obsessed with what a horror show it is.
Can you remember any of the first podcasts you started listening to?
I have been a Never Not Funny fan since the beginning & I found Last Podcast on the Left very quickly too. They are still two of my favorites!
What do you hope your show does for people?
I hope we make people laugh & feel like they're part of a sisterhood based on honesty & living your best life without making yourself small.
What’s the suckiest part about being a podcaster?
Sometimes you'll have fans that will be a little bit too familiar & forget that I don't know anything about them... it doesn't happen often, but boundaries are very important. I love meeting people after shows & I even get dinner with some fans if the timing works out, but it's important to remember that I am still a person who deserves privacy when I want it.
And what’s the best?
We've had fans who have taken our advice to heart & moved cross country or ended up getting married & it feels amazing to know that we gave them that extra little push or permission to do the thing that that wanted in the first place. It's really fulfilling to know we've helped other people.
Describe your listeners in 3 words.
Badass smart thoughtful.
Care to shoutout a listener now?
Our girl Schmoo lives in Iowa & she is the best! I always love seeing her when I come through town. She makes a lot of great .gifs & has bunny rabbits. 10/10 Schmoo!
How has the show changed since it began?
We used to have characters on the show, more in a Comedy Bang Bang style set up, but ended up scrapping them because people wanted to hear more of us talking about real things, not necessarily riffing with a fake character. Those are some real goofy episodes though, we had on characters like The Podcast Magician & our baby Eric which was an adult man we bought for a dollar & a Tecate beer. At live shows we used to make him wear a diaper & come out to do bits with us - he's met a lot of famous women in a diaper. We did that to him.
How has podcasting changed you?
I feel like podcasting has made me a more confident person on the microphone in riffing or just in conversation in general. Having built this community from the ground up too, I think we are all very grateful to have something that is totally ours in the entertainment world where so much is at the whim of the industry. It's definitely reiterated the lesson to not wait for someone else to say yes, just build what you want to see in the world. It's also made me get more in touch with my feminine side - I grew up around a lot of guys & listen to punk music & love action movies, and just don't have a vast knowledge of pop culture that is marketed towards women. I am thankful for the show helping me access that side of myself more & learning to appreciate it.
How has podcasting changed your life?
I've gotten to do so many cool things because of Lady to Lady - we've played festivals all over the country & toured & the weekly show pays a good chunk of my bills, so that's super validating. And it's introduced me to so many other funny women - there's so much power in a bunch of women getting together & laughing, it makes me feel invincible. I am so thankful for Lady to Lady & for Babs & Tess for that. And just meeting fans on the road is the best... growing up I was always at concerts & I have this wanderlust where I just want to tour all of the time, and having a podcast fanbase has made that possible in a way that stand up alone has not yet.
Give us a podcast recommendation.
I am a huge fan of the Trillbilly Worker's Party out of Eastern Kentucky - not only are they hilarious but Terrance, Tom & Tanya are amazing Southern Leftists who have changed my perspective on so many things. I really love their show a lot, especially whenever they read Speak Your Peace, which is a section in their local newspaper with some real doozies in it.
Thanks, Brandie!
